Your Next Buyer Might Ask AI. Will It Mention You?

For years, businesses worried about where they appeared on Google.
Now buyers are asking a different question.
They are opening ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI assistants and asking:
“Who can help me with this?”
“Which provider should I consider?”
“What is the best option near me?”
“Who specialises in my industry?”
The answer may include your business.
It may include your competitors.
Or it may confidently describe what you did three years ago.
That is the new visibility problem.
AI recommendations are becoming part of the buying journey
People are not only using AI to write emails and meeting notes. They are using it to narrow choices before visiting a website, making a call or asking for a quote.
That changes the starting line.
If your business is absent from a relevant answer, you may never reach the shortlist.
If you appear but the description is wrong, that can be worse. A buyer may dismiss you for a service you actually provide, a location you cover or an industry you know well.
This does not mean there is one permanent “AI ranking”. There isn’t.
Answers change by platform, prompt, location, available sources and date. A single screenshot proves very little. A useful check needs context.
Start with the buyer’s question
The worst visibility test is:
“Tell me about my company.”
Of course the answer will focus on you. You put your name in the question.
A better test removes the brand and uses the language of a real buyer.
For example:
“Who helps Melbourne manufacturers introduce AI safely?”
“Which NDIS consultants can improve documentation workflows?”
“What Australian platforms help agribusinesses evaluate new technology?”
“Which local restaurant is suitable for a business lunch near me?”
The question should include the problem, buyer, service and region where they matter.
Then record five things:
1. Does your business appear?
2. Which competitors appear?
3. How are the businesses described?
4. Which sources support the answer?
5. What useful information is missing or wrong?
That gives you a dated snapshot. It is a starting point for investigation, not a promise of leads.
What actually improves AI visibility?
Here is the bit some vendors will make sound mystical.
It usually comes back to clear, credible information.
Can your website explain exactly what you do?
Does it identify the people and industries you help?
Does it show where you operate?
Do your service pages answer specific buying questions?
Can independent sources confirm your expertise, examples and outcomes?
Is the information consistent across your website, LinkedIn profile, directories, partner pages and media mentions?
AI assistants work with the evidence they can find and interpret. If your business leaves behind a vague, contradictory or outdated trail, the resulting answer should not surprise you.
Please do not respond by publishing 100 generic AI articles before Friday.
More content is not automatically better evidence.
One clear service page, one properly explained case study and one accurate company profile can be more useful than a pile of filler written for nobody in particular.
Why we are starting manually
At AI is OK, we have launched a free AI Visibility Check.
The tempting move would be to build a large dashboard, connect a dozen data sources and start charging before learning what businesses actually value.
We are doing the useful work first.
You tell us what your business does, who you help and where you operate. We create relevant buyer questions, review accessible AI answers and record what we find.
The first check is free and manually reviewed.
If the snapshot exposes a meaningful gap, you can ask about a deeper paid audit and a practical improvement plan.
This approach gives us better evidence too. We learn whether businesses care about mentions, competitor comparisons, source accuracy or the specific content changes that could improve how they are understood.
That is how a service should earn the right to become software.
